Why I Blog
In preparation for BlawgThink in a couple weeks, I have been thinking about why I blog and the mechanics behind it.
Aside from the business development reasons for blogging, I do it for two real reasons: to add a little documentation to my thinking about patent law and how businesses can effectively use patents, and to keep connected and in touch with others in the field.
My evolving vision of my blog/website is to build a repository of useful information on the subject. This repository may have topics to which a client or potential client may refer, topics that may evolve into training materials or a book, or may have other potentially useful information for myself, my clients, or other practitioners. How this vision is embodied is still in the development stage.
The next version of my website/blog will use ExpressionEngine. I expect it to be live in the next few weeks, and I see it evolving over the next few months. My thoughts are to try several ideas for categorizing, cataloging, and cross referencing blog postings/webpages.
The second reason, keeping connected with others in the field, is much more intangible but more important than the first.
Part of patent practice is that I often handle a company’s crown jewels. The documents I create, and the advise that I give relating to those documents can be essential to the success of the company. As such, I have a tremendous responsibility to my clients to be as up to date and educated as I can be.
A huge part of keeping current in the field is my blogging activity. For me, blogging is about 25% writing blog entries, 70% reading other people’s blogs, and 5% corresponding with bloggers or readers. By reading other people’s blogs, I can get a sense of the current CAFC opinions, the pulse of patent reform legislation, or any other current issue or someone’s in-depth analysis of a particular topic.
Because I also contribute to the content as well as take other people’s input, I have been able to cultivate some discussion in my personal areas of interest. More importantly, I have become ‘connected’ to a group of people who have common interests, knowledge, and often times different viewpoints from my own. This is the big payoff to blogging in my experience.
I am looking forward to personally meeting a bunch of interesting and thought provoking people at BlawgThink in Chicago. If you are a regular reader of my blog and will be attending, please drop me an email.
