A qualified patent agent or attorney must be current on patent law. Even though patents are required by the United States Constitution and were first examined by Thomas Jefferson, the law surrounding patents is constantly in flux. The Patent Office is continually improving and changing their processes and the courts are continually handing down decisions concerning patents.
Being able to draft a patent that is issued by the Patent Office is merely one facet of the legal knowledge required. Studying and understanding the case law that interprets the patent laws and patents themselves is an ongoing practice that all practitioners, to a greater or lesser degree, must do.
I attend several seminars and conferences on intellectual property each year. In addition, I am currently a law student at the University Of Denver College Of Law.
I keep a weblog of various intellectual property topics entitled Anything Under the Sun Made By Man, an Intellectual Property Web Log.
